The firm’s history spans over a century and begins with the founding of the firm in 1903 by Newton Rowell and two other lawyers in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The firm later grew to seven lawyers in 1910, and was known as Rowell Reid & Wood. In the mid-twenties, Rhodes Scholar Roland Michener and Osgoode Hall graduate Daniel Lang formed another Toronto-based firm, which would eventually merge with McMillan LLP.

A broad-based international firm advises global companies in their expansion into Canada and Canadian firms seeking to do business abroad. Its Intellectual Property and Corporate/Commercial Groups are recognized as leaders in their fields. The firm also represents a variety of provincial and federal governments, trade organizations, private equity funds and foreign sovereign wealth funds.

The firm has a national reputation in representing corporate, institutional and government clients in complex financing and commercial transactions. In addition to its own vast collection of legal and other materials, the library offers access to all the holdings of Emory University’s Woodruff Library and several other school and departmental libraries, making it a particularly rich destination for research involving U.S. and United Nations documents, health sciences, and the many special collections in the Emory Manuscripts and Archives Library.
